Special issue dedicated to Aquaculture and capture fisheries development policy and strategy of Uzbekistan

The fishery sector of Uzbekistan is functioning under a free market condition with a complete privatization of former state enterprisers and establishment of new highly technological fishery enterprisers. Fishery is an important food production sector. It provides food security and better nutrition by supplying the population with high-quality protein. It creates jobs in rural areas, thus contributing to higher living standards.
The decline in catches of fish from natural water bodies, obsolete processing equipment, inability of marketing organizations to sell the cultivated fish, and lack of marketing made it necessary to reform the old administrative-command system managing the sector. The stock-holding company Uzbalyk and the association Karakalpakbalyk were liquidated in order to hasten the process of privatization and development of private property in the fishery sector, apply market principles and mechanisms in the organization of the fish breeding and fish-catching enterprises, further demonopolize this sector and develop a competitive environment and regulate the capture and selling of fish products. The reform in the fishery sector was implemented in stages; by 2003 all enterprises had been privatized and state assets became private property. The administrative-command management of the fishery sector was liquidated.
In Uzbekistan all inland water bodies are regulated specifically for the purpose of irrigated agriculture. However, the fishery sector is one of the most important branches of Uzbekistan industries. Small-scale private enterprises are a priority in the development strategy in fisheries. It is important to rehabilitate the infrastructure of the fishery sector and provide training for farmers in the effective technologies of fish cultivation, significantly increase the interest of fish farms and start profitable rural fishery enterprises. Improving the skills of fishery and fish farm workers and managers at the state and private sectors is a prerequisite for increasing productivity. To address the above concerns, a number of workshops have been organized in cooperation with FAO. One of the outcomes has been the draft “Policy and strategy of the development and management of aquaculture and fishery in Uzbekistan”. These workshops are also aimed at joining the efforts of leading specialists in fish cultivation in the country in the cause of improving modern technologies and management practices and sharing knowledge, establishing contacts and development of a strategic partnership with international organizations interested in the sustainable development of the fishery sector.

Productiveness of prawn Macro brachium Nipponese (De Haan.1984) in reservoirs of Uzbekistan.   Page 34
The article describes productiveness of the freshwater prawn  Macro brachium Nipponese (De Haan.1984) in different reservoirs of Uzbekistan. Based on results of investigation on productiveness of populations from Aydar-Arnasay lake system and ponds of “Aquaculture” fish farm. Were indicated difference in productiveness of prawns in different reservoirs and it’s dependence on water mineralization.  Page 34

Grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, maturation and fecundity under conditions of pond farms in Uzbakistan  Page36
Under conditions of pond fish farms in Uzbekistan one-year-old grass carp reach 17-36 cm body length and their gonads are on the 1st stage of maturation. Two-years-old females (length 30-50 cm) have gonads on the 2nd stage. A part of three-years-old females with faster growth (length more than 50 cm) have gonads on the 3rd and 4th stages. A part with more slow growth (length less than 45 cm) stay on the 2nd stage of maturation.
